2017 Porsche Boxster Facelift Spied Testing Four-Cylinder Turbo Engines

Now that the Spyder version of the Boxster has brought the lineup towards its completion, we’re expecting the mid-cycle revamp. The facelift for the Boxster is now entering an advanced development stage. The changes will be led by a turbocharging revolution and we’re here to show you the Boxster testing with the new engines.

We’ve talked about the forced feeding of Porsche’s junior model on numerous occasions, but YouTube user DrGumoLunatic who uploaded the video below claims the car was hiding a four-pot at its middle.

We have to trust him on the aural clues, since we couldn’t make anything of the videos’ soundtrack. Nevertheless, the exhaust tip could indicate the presence of four-cylinder engines.

The details in the engine compartment

The rumor mill sees two new engines for the Boxster and Boxster S. The first will drop its current 3.4-liter flat six for a turbocharged 2-liter delivering 286 HP (290 PS) and a peak torque of 295 LB-FT (400 NM).

Those expecting the 2.0-liter to be an Audi-sourced engine, as is the case with the Macan 2.0T sold outside the US and Europe, are wrong. The 2-liter is expected to be Porsche’s own boxer heart.

As for the S-flavored Boxster, this will give up on its 3.6-liter atmospheric unit for 2.5-liter turbo producing 360 HP (365 PS) and a peak torque of 347 LB-FT (470 Nm). Some even talk about Porsche introducing its now-patented variable compression ratio on these new engines.

The big picture

As you know, September’s Frankfurt Motor Show will bring a similar turbocharged wave for the Porsche 911 facelift - this will only use 6-cylinder boxers though.

Nevertheless, while the 911 has had turbo engines at the top of its range for decades, the mid-cycle revamp for the third-gen Boxster will bring turbo power to the model for the first time. The thing we’re most curious about is how this changes the character of the open-top Porsche. The revised Boxster is set to arrive in 2016 as a 2017 model.

PS: as for that complete pre-revamp Boxster lineup we mentioned in the intro, the only model based on this we’re expecting to debut before the facelift takes over is the Black Edition.
