Premium German automakers like to reinvent their cars starting from the flagship and working down. BMW did it with the F01 7 Series, Mercedes followed with the new S-Class, and in a couple of years, Audi will launch all its latest tech together with the D5 generation of the A8.
Even though the A8 is being delayed for two years while autonomous tech works its way under that front bumper, most of the engines are ready. They will include more powerful versions of existing mills, hybrids and much more.
Auto Bild has an interesting scoop on the 2017 Audi A8, starting with the S8. As you all know, Audi have been reluctant to make an RS version of their biggest car, but that doesn't mean they won't make the next S8 more dynamic. Apparently, we can look forward to a total output of 580 HP and 800 Nm (591 lb-ft) of torque.
That's an improvement of 60 HP and 150 Nm over the current model, which has proven faster than Mercedes' S63 AMG in drag races organized under certain conditions.
Another big piece of news is that the ultra-expensive A8 W12 will be kept in production. Sources claim that while the total engine displacement will be reduced from 6.3 to 6 liters, the output will increase from 500 to 585 HP, while torque will reach 800 Nm, which leads us to believe it will either get a small turbo or hybrid tech.
The regular A8 that is scheduled to come out in 2017 will receive a new 3-liter TDI that produces 286 HP and 620 Nm (458 lb-ft) of torque. The new 48-volt electric system will help it be more economical while an e-tron model is being planned for those seeking ultra-low emissions.
Just use all this into to describe the first-ever autonomous Audi and… yeah, the A8 will be pretty awesome.
